I am very happy to share these two video lessons, which are part of a series of videos coming up on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL, called #MZDRUMS VIDEO TIPS (subscribe to the channel HERE).
More videos will be coming out, so make sure you subscribe to the channel so you don't miss anything! :-)
Also, both videos have a free PDF download that will help you follow the lesson and practice on your kit!

The first one is a BASS DRUM EXERCISE - This is a cool exercise to improve your bass drum control, technique, groove - and it will help your overall feel and groove on the kit. Also, it's a nice coordination workout!
PDF download: http://ow.ly/M8Uzq

The next one is called PARADIDDLES WITH BASS DRUM HITS - it's an interesting way to practice your paradiddles with the hands, and try different hits with the bass drum. This exercises will help your coordination, groove, time, and will open up possibilities between hands and feet. For those of you that have had difficulties playing through some of the material from the lesson "Bass Drum Exercise", this will also work as a nice introductory exercise to that lesson. Give it a try, and grab the PDF to read and practice along.

It's always an honor to be featured on this great drum magazine, Modern Drummer Magazine Brazil. Here's a review of my album with Amanda Ruzza, Glasses, No Glasses which was published in November 2014. Below are the portuguese and english versions. Thanks for reading and for the constant support!

"I recently had the pleasure of attending a workshop from the incredible musician Mauricio Zottarelli. I saw some friends there, I met other musicians, it was total interaction. I left the class with an immense desire to study, listen and make music. Mauricio is undoubtedly one of the most amazing drummers I've seen and heard playing. He's in my top ten list. Come on, everyone has a list like this, why can't I? And as a gift, besides the class that he taught us, he kindly gave me a copy of his latest disc, an instrumental project done in collaboration with bassist Amanda Ruzza and featuring the amazing Leo Genovese. Glasses, Glasses is a fantastic work with lots of interaction and freedom. Music without borders or limits, in every way.

Mauricio presents us with some great and tricky drumming passages, sometimes accompanying, or sometimes phrasing wonderfully. But these passages never cease to be musical, showing the drummer's seriousness and commitment. His grooves and licks are full of swing, power and precision. At times, the message that prevails on this record is "more is more". Haven't we all heard about the concept of "less is more"? Well, the opposite is also true. And there's no way be minimalist in a project like this, with so much creative freedom and expression.

It begins with Soundcheck, with touches of funk and drum 'n' bass filling the music with a lot of class. Pay close attention to how he rides on the hi hat, and how he uses the higher pitched snare. Electronic and acoustic both merging in the best way. Glasses shows tons of swing, with each player being very free but also connected simultaneously. When the bass solo begins, the music takes a more relaxed turn, with lower dynamics, but the three musicians are still tearing it up, and soon after the track gets powerful again. Big Foot has a second-line groove that is very swinging, and a wonderful drum solo, with very interesting ideas and phrases. Fuego is one of the densest songs I've ever heard. It features several effect pedals and also a Cajon, over a base made mainly by Amanda's bass. Classic Golden blends maracatu, jazz, funk and rock with well-built nuances. The bass solo is from another world. Very impressive arrangement!

Fantastic work!”

Arranjo impressionante!

Trabalho fantástico!
"(...) So what on earth is Glasses, No Glasses? It is a stripping away of the façade of comfort zones; it is viewing the world without the proverbial tints; it is a celebration of the beautiful madness of music, whether it comes from Brasil, or America, or Mali, or for that matter, the real Timbuktu.
And from the perspective of Mauricio Zottarelli, whose drums thunder and roar; whose cymbals pirouette in the smash and shattering of percussion colouration and from the growling of Amanda Ruzza’s bass and the mad rush to the head of Leo Genovese’s acrobatic playing, this is a first rate set from a crew that is deceptively loose… This is a group of musicians who is taking much of its music to the next level. For this is where the energy and all the talk of seeing the musical world as it is… That is where the musicians are really at."
(7 Lives)

O meu profundo agradecimento a:
Gustavo
Assis Brasil, Oriente Lopez, Itaiguara Brandão, Rodrigo Ursaia, Milene
Corso, Dom Salvador, Cidinho Teixeira, Esperanza Spalding e Brandi

A balada "Long

Itaiguara me recomendou o grande Dave Darlington.

Áudio do CD pronto.... e agora?

Here are a few notes on the album, and its production........ by MZ

The first ideas for what would become the album "7 Lives" started coming to me around 2006. I was studying composition with Charlie Banacos, one of the most amazing teachers and mentors I ever had. Although I worked with him for a short period of time (3 months), his teachings and words of encouragement stayed with me and still play a major role on everything I do musically.
Charlie passed away a few years ago, and he is dearly missed! This almost life-changing experience I had with him is actually a common thing among all his students. It's always incredible when I meet former students of his, and they all seem to have had the same experiences than me, to some degree. Talk about an amazing person!

So, with a few original tunes written, I called some of my dearest friends, people I enjoyed being around and making music with, and we played through some of these songs. The music started taking shape, and with everybody's talented playing and positive comments and input, we finalized pre-production and went into the studio on a few different sessions, starting in October 2008.
I am the luckiest guy the be able to count of the contributions of such amazing musicians and friends!
My enormous thank you to:
Gustavo Assis Brasil, Oriente Lopez, Itaiguara Brandão, Rodrigo Ursaia, Milene Corso, Dom Salvador, Cidinho Teixeira, Esperanza Spalding and Brandi Disterheft for being the absolute best at what you do, and for your beautiful participation on this record!

Production stories and ideas

In the process of planning the track order and overall feel for the record, I had the idea of asking each pianist to contribute a tune to the album. Oriente Lopez's "Spirit" is a beautiful song and the first original from Oriente that I played. We have, since then, recorded a full album of Oriente's music called "Aguas Profundas". Dom Salvador's "De Lá Pra Cá (From There to Here)" is a classic Salvador tune, you can close your eyes and hear and imagine the samba-jazz movement happening in the 60s, and all this wonderful new music being created and played in Brazil, all from just his writing and playing... amazing! Cidinho Teixeira's "Magali" was a song I played many times with Cidinho during the legendary Brazilian jazz-Sunday nights at Zinc Bar in NYC. What a great tune, fun to play, and I think it showcases Cidinho's masterful writing, arranging, and incredible groove!

CD Inside panel - "7 Lives" drum groove

Of my originals, I think "7 Lives" and "30" were the most challenging to record. From a drummer's standpoint, I wanted to create challenging material to play, but I also wanted to have interesting melodies and harmonies happening. Both of these tunes have some tricky patterns and coordination challenges on the drums that demanded some extra hours in my practicing room!
The ballad "Long Gone" was also challenging because of its form and meter changes, but again, I am so lucky to have these very special people playing with me! I couldn't have wished for better results.

During the studio sessions, I had the idea of jamming with Gustavo on a couple of different tracks, one slightly more organized, and another one where we wouldn't even talk about it, and we would just play. Gustavo and I go a long way back, we used to play "crazy free stuff" since we met at Berklee College of Music in the fall of 1999. We played countless gigs together, and released a CD together ("Dig Trio", from 2003). So I imagined that the chemistry between the two of us would play out on these 2 jams in an interesting way. As fate would have it, Gustavo and I couldn't see each other at all during the tracking of "Two Way Street" (parts 1 and 2), so this made for an even more special couple of jams!

Finally, I had an idea for an arrangement of Wayne Shorter's "Pinocchio", to be played as a fast-samba. I checked out several versions of the song, and noticed different changes, and occasionally, different bass-notes (mostly on recordings featuring Ron Carter on bass), which eventually helped me think a bit more "out of the box" on the harmony and arrangement of the song... so I tried a few different things of my own as well. I love Wayne, and love this tune!

After recording all the tracks with engineer Michael Brorby, who always does a fantastic job by the way!, and getting some extra help from my dear friend Chris Vandirlis recording Milene's vocals, it was time to mix/master it. Itaiguara recommended I called Dave Darlington to see if he would be available to do it. Dave is one of the most incredible guys I know, and needless to say, after working with him on "7 Lives" I have been doing most of my recordings with him, and recommending him for everybody I know! My friend Marcos Vigio gave invaluable help on listening and commenting on the mastering and finalizing of the album.... and right then, it was all done!

CD audio is done, now what?

Another great friend of mine came through for me at this point, and actually, during the whole process too: the sensational photographer and artist Peter Poby, who called me numerous times during the making of the album to make sure I was on the right track and didn't give up when facing the inevitable difficulties that come with making such a personal album. Poby "just nailed" the cover photo and art of the CD, I remember him just yelling at me during the photo shoot, when he took THE photo, "I got it!!! That's it!". Yep, you definitely did, my friend. WOW.... Thank you so much!

Many friends and dearest people helped me in many different ways- with words of advise, comments, and just "lending an ear" so I could test the material I had, and see people's reactions. To all of you, (you know who you are, and how much I bugged you all!) I am forever grateful.
To my family, my lovely wife, and all the people I played with during all these years - you all inspired me to be the best that I can be, and that's what the record is all about - trying to achieve our absolute best, and how it may seem like we need 7 Lives to do it!

I'd
like to also thank you all so much for your constant support and interest, and for reading this blog post (and hopefully check out the album too!) - I hope that you
enjoyed the stories and enjoy listening to the music as much as the band and I enjoyed playing
and recording it!
(E COMO OUVIMOS...) NÓS SOMOS O QUE OUVIMOS! (E COMO OUVIMOS...)
Por Mauricio Zottarelli

(texto originalmente publicado na Revista Modern Drummer Brasil, Maio/2014)

Explico melhor a seguir.

Aperte o play e boa viagem.
(Pode ir lá! Eu espero...)

E então, como foi? Conseguiu ouvir a playlist toda? O CD inteiro? Sem interrupção? Concentrado? Relaxado? A seção rítmica, o ritmo.

Hello, my dear friends! On this post I would like to talk about some ideas that have been intriguing me for a while. Let me explain…. Some recent situations made me think about how we all (including the new generation of musicians and artists coming up now) listen to music. How, where, in which way, how often, and obviously how all that influences our way of playing and expressing our art and our voice.

So let's leave aside the technical exercises, musical scores, our instruments and practice rooms. Let's analyze for a bit how we are hearing and assimilating the music today. Firstly, here are some of the situations to which I refer above:

1 ) In a recent conversation with a friend who teaches high school students in a school in the state of Massachusetts, US, he told me the following: some of his students (almost daily) gather in groups in the hall of school with an old turntable (yes , LP !). They bring LPs borrowed from their parents, and also rare things that they find out there, and they listen to this music as a group during their breaks. While I was making my "completely amused" face and was processing this fact, my friend said that he thought perhaps these students were a little "tired" of listening to music on their cell phones and all the distractions that this new medium provides.

2 ) When I was studying at Berklee College of Music, one of my professors talked about certain records that I had to listen to. Following my ever-increasing interest in jazz, and in order to broaden my horizons and assimilate the vocabulary relevant to the style, he recommended me to buy some of these recordings. It took months of analysis and many repetitions of certain tracks and certain moments of these classic recordings - where, more often that not, the goal was to not pay close attention solely on drums, necessarily . I'll explain this in further detail below.

3 ) During the past few years, we all have been following the emergence of a large number of videos of "shredding" where drummers get together to play/jam/exchange solos, etc… In many conversations with other drummers, students, friends and colleagues in the music scene of New York and also in Brazil , I have noticed how many of these musicians are "obsessed" with videos of drum solos - amazing demonstrations of extreme technical prowess and ease in the kit, made by phenomenal drummers.

I have several friends who teach music to young people and adults , both individually or in schools and universities, and the feeling and response I get from them is pretty much the same ... In general , young drummers today are highly technical, and have fantastic command of their instruments, and do amazing things on the drums etc. . etc. . But on the other hand, many do not know anything about harmony, about ear training, they cannot " hear" and/or recognize a chord or even sing a note accompanied by piano/guitar. They don't understand what song "forms" are (to them, AABA seems to be a strange secret code), and hence they cannot play with bands in a musical and effective way. Many of them want to play traditional jazz and learn the language and everything, but they don't know who some of the major artists are and/or their most important works ...

I think you know where I'm going with this, right? By drawing a parallel with our own lives, schedules, our work and our daily crazy routines, I feel we need to take a break and reflect on our habit of listening to music, and how it is going - what we are listening to, how we are listening to it and assimilating it, how often and how attentively. Today it is very common to have our songs/playlists (our music collection !) in our cell phones (just imagine, readers who were born and remember the 70s and 80s… what a difference !), and everything has become extremely convenient and easy. But on the other hand, the philosophy of "multitasking" is so predominant in our culture and daily lives that most of the time we are not even paying attention to what we are hearing, since we are doing a thousand other things at the same time. In reference to the 80s, I remember buying a vinyl LP in the record store and running home to listen to it; and I would do it many times from beginning to end, with my eyes closed . I would attempt to memorize the lyrics and arrangements , read the liner notes a thousand times. I imagined to be present in one show of this certain artist or band, and I listened closely to the different instruments and different orchestrations in each recording. Every record was an experience, a dream, a journey that could last for days, months ... If we talk to older folks who remember and lived in the age of radio, imagine that! Without TV, audio was their mean of "transportation ", the way by which people traveled, dreamed and had fun. The music had giant power!

Unfortunately, nowadays I believe that due to the tremendous ease of access to so much music (Internet, social media, streaming, etc. . ), the high technology of cell phones, computers, tablets - all of that coupled with so much hyperactivity in our lives and our impending difficulty to concentrate on one thing only - these things eventually obstruct and/or impede our experience to hear music, they affect our assimilation of any artistic content, and in general, they make our habit of listening to music very superficial and vague.

In our case, dear readers, as passionate fans of music - be it as a professional artist or not - the situation is even more bizarre . Consider, for example, when was the last time you heard a CD or a playlist, an MP3, or even a live show fully concentrated on its content? A song or artist that we like, playing "exclusively" in our headphone sets, or our favorite band performing at a football stadium. How often do we hear this with total commitment and attention? Eyes closed? Without picking up our phone to check our email, update our Twitter , Facebook or to look on Instagram - which are things that we probably did 30 seconds ago anyway?
Or do we try to "film" the show "to watch it later" or to share on social media so your friends "see it"? (while you are missing it!)

I would like to propose an experiment, an attempt to shut down a little from this frantic reality we live in, and just relax. Let's choose an album that we like, maybe something we haven't heard in a long time, or something that is on our "check-it-out" list , but we haven't had time to do. It can also be a playlist on your iTunes or MP3s on your phone . Take some time off for you - no distractions, turn off your home phone, set the phone in airplane mode etc , etc. . . During the next hour , it's just you and your music. Press play and have a nice trip.
( Take your time, that's ok ! ... I'll wait right here. )

So how was it? Did you listen to the entire playlist? The entire CD ? Without interruption? Were you concentrated? Relaxed ? Or did you fall asleep and didn't hear anything? No problem . The important thing is to reserve that time for you. With some regularity, you will get used to these "breaks" from reality, and you will be increasingly focused on the music , and you will let it carry you away . The goal is to relax and travel within ourselves, almost like meditation - but the difference is that in this exercise, the main objective is to focus on music, on the recording.
Let's try to mentally visualize the studio, the musicians playing, and the music being created for the first time. Let's check out the different parts, the different instruments… The arrangement, the soloists, the interaction among the musicians. The rhythm section, the rhythm . Think about what each track feels like to us, what it reminds us, the emotion that each composition brings us. Let's investigate what it is that moves us, and what we like and don't like about a certain song, track or performance.
Create the habit of doing this a few times during the week, and take note of everything you find interesting. I have done this a few times recently, and the result is always fascinating . Suddenly , I hear parts of the arrangement of certain songs that I had never noticed before, or solos, or melodies that suddenly "pop". Certain textures, or sounds, timbres and instrumentation. The lyrics and the interpretation of the melody by singer/soloist. The grooves, and the choices that drummers make in relation to what to play, and where. What would we have done in their place? Details of each track and the sound of each production. Mixing, and the balance of the different instruments in the track. Who are the musicians who are playing ? Do they combine effectively as a group ? Do they play well together ? Or sometimes, does it look like a contest to see who "speaks" louder and faster?
Anyway, things like that will probably come up during a more careful listening experience.
I imagine some of you could be thinking, "But this is very technical, very analytical, music has to be more instinctive . Music is supposed to make us dance… " .
Sure, I'm not saying that you will always listen to music this way, or that any style of music will stimulate your interest and curiosity in such a way. There's a lot of stuff out there that is done very carelessly, and with almost zero quality in their content. In that case, what are you going to carefully hear? Analyze what? The proposal here is to give ourselves a chance to assimilate all the good things and to learn. I personally believe that in order to play drums well, and also to play well with other musicians, one needs to do more than just being locked into a room practicing for ten hours a day. Of course this is very important, and will give you a very high level of technical proficiency in your instrument , but is it just that? Is music only about us studying by ourselves, alone ? In my humble opinion, music is listening. To be able to play and to execute comes in right after , but listening is paramount - listen to the history, listen to our teachers/masters, listen to different styles, culture and art that are out there at our disposal . Assimilate all this with a lot of patience and perseverance. No distractions, and with total commitment. We are what we listen to, but obviously , how we listen is an extremely important factor in our walk and our relentless and never-ending pursuit of improvement as professionals and art lovers.
Until next time….. mz
The shows are also celebrating the release of Mike's new studio CD in a decade, "Cold Truth, Warm Heart"(Nineteen Eight Records):
(from Mike's website)
"... Bassist and composer Mike Pope builds significant musical, personal
and spiritual bridges between the past, present and future with his
third release, Cold Truth, Warm Heart. The new album shows him to be a visionary composer, arranger and bandleader.

The 2014 offering is the first in a decade and establishes a new
threshold of leadership for the virtuoso acoustic and electric bassist
who has toured extensively with Chick Corea, David Sanborn, Al DiMeola and Bill Bruford, and more recently, Joe Locke and Eldar Djangirov.

'The new album,' says Pope, 'was written for the players who
were playing it. The idea was to write stuff that was inspired, worrying
less about how it would all go together than how it felt in the
moment'. On most compositions, he establishes the subject matter and
directs the conversation, while the (recording and touring) musicians
contribute superb interaction and improvisation. Pope leaves plenty of
space for these world-class improvisers to do what they do.

The stellar touring band includes Eldar Djangirov (piano), Joe Locke (vibraphone), Bob Franceschini (saxophone) and Mauricio Zottarelli (drums). The studio album features Joe, Mauricio, Geoffrey Keezer (piano/keys), Alan Blackman (piano), Seamus Blake (saxophone) and Lydia Courtney."
First, a recording session on which I am playing percussion for my dear friend, the bassist Itaiguara Brandão. He's producing his debut recording as a leader, watch out of that album coming out later this year!
The Brazil project featured Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin leading the band, with Abraham Laboriel and myself on the rhythm section.
The special guests: Daniel Jobim did a beautiful job singing and playing some of his grandfather's greatest songs, and we had two great singers joining the band - Lisa Ono for the Japan dates, and Céu for the show in Miami. In the Miami date, the great Paulinho da Costa joined the band also.
Had a great time with the band on the road: Theo Pascal on bass, Matt King on piano, and Carmen on guitar, keys and vocals.

I played a hybrid set that is always a lot of fun to explore. No tons, just floor tom, snare and bongos, a cajon as a seat, and a bell/woodblock. Always inspiring to play it, and it generates many new ideas for grooves and fills too.

As always, thanks to Soultone Cymbals, Vic Firth, GruvGear, FSA cajons, LP Percussion, Powerclick in-ear monitors and Lexicon Pro Audio.

First of all, my first-ever video lesson on drumset! On it I am talking a bit about my concept and ideas for playing the Ijexá groove, a Afro-Brazilian rhythm which you may also have heard being called Afoxé. Some coordination is addressed, as well as ways to orchestrate around the kit and create original grooves and solos based on this rhythm. Check it out, share it, enjoy it! Many thanks to Soultone Cymbals for their support and their A-M-A-Z-I-N-G instruments!!!

This next one is a groove solo, based on the Ijexá / Afoxé groove. Check out the lesson above first for the basic idea, and then see the solo for some applications!
Lastly, this is from Sergio Galvão's show at the Blue Note NYC in early March 2014.... we are playing the classic Brazilian song "Vou Deitar e Rolar...".
